Our Story
Visit Great Plains Buffalo is a group of outfitters that consists of the siblings of the 5th generation of the Jerde family that settled in Perkins County South Dakota. In the 2000’s, we left home and moved to the city to pursue our careers. Over the years we realized that how we grew up seemed like an adventure to the outside world. It’s different from the city, the suburbs, even small town America. Cities and beaches are great, but there’s nothing like totally stepping into a different culture right here in the heartland of America.
Day-to-day looks like caring for the animals, home cooked meals, beautiful landscapes working with our hands. There is minimal interruption from the stress and stimulation of city life. From hunting and gathering, to working on the ranch, we realized only a small percentage of the population gets to experience this lifestyle. We wanted to create an opportunity to SHARE our treasure with the world. That is why we created Visit Great Plains Buffalo.
The Ranch
Great Plains Buffalo Ranch is a 45,000 acre bison ranch in western South Dakota. We represent one of the largest and wildest buffalo herds left in the United States. The ranch is managed as holistically and organically as possible. We strive to provide the best habitat possible for all kinds of native wildlife such as a variety of fish, deer, pronghorn antelope, elk, birds, rattlesnakes, mountain lions, coyotes and wolves to name a few. Our bison love the native prairie. Whether you are looking for grass-fed all natural meat to take home, or the biggest trophy you can find, we will make sure to exceed your hunting expectations.
The land you will be hunting on is rich with history. Our great great grandparents were pioneers and settled this land in 1911. You will see homesteads from the early 1900’s, historical artifacts, and tepee replicas, and you’ll learn about Pioneer and Native American Culture.
Jasmine Sborov
Jasmine is a former basketball player and College Basketball Coach. After spending 7 years coaching at Harvard University, she decided it was time for a change. Jasmine has always been appreciative of nature and what it has to offer. From an early age, she began hunting with her Paw Paw and has been loving the outdoors ever since. Leaning into her Native American and Norwegian heritage, the decision to become an Outfitter was an easy choice. Her experience makes her an excellent hunting guide, and will make sure you enjoy your time.
Emmy Jerde
Emmy was raised on Great Plains Buffalo Ranch from the time she was just 9 months old. Growing up 100 miles from the nearest Wal-Mart or McDonalds didn’t seem strange to her at all! After college, she moved to Nashville, TN and worked successfully as a full time musician for almost 10 years, and still plays out of hunting season. You may have seen her on the CMT awards! The life she knew growing up started calling her, so she returned and is an exciting hunting guide. She’s got lots of experience, as she grew up hunting in South Dakota. Safety is top priority to Emmy, so don’t be offended at a polite correction. Maybe she will break out her fiddle by the campfire after the hunt!
Payton Jerde
Payton is the oldest son of the Jerde family at Great Plains Buffalo Ranch. He was born and raised on the ranch. Payton moved to Nashville where he’s worked as a successful musician since 2015, though he has always stayed involved at the ranch over the years. Payton is a very experienced shooter and hunter. He splits his time seasonally between Nashville and the ranch. His strong and steady presence will give both you and the animal the perfect low stress hunt.
Tate and Bobbi Wells
Tate, known as “Rip”, and Bobbi have two daughters, Jayda and Jenna, and run eight hunting dogs. They have been ranching for 20 years, starting from Tate’s Grandad Jack Wilson. Tate and Bobbi have been with Great Plains Buffalo since 2021 and have been active members of the South Dakota Houndsmen Association since 2016. Hunting is a passion of theirs – big game (bison, elk, deer, mountain lion) and small predators and varmints. Anyone would be lucky to have either one of them as their hunting guide. And if you’re really lucky, you just might have a chance to beat them at cornhole while you’re here…probably not though!
This is more than a hunt. It’s the trip of a lifetime. It’s an experience—a time to explore and discover what the native prairies of the Great Plains have to offer.
